Case Studies

The Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital is a state-of-the-art healthcare facility located in the holy city of Najaf, approximately 160 km south of Baghdad. Originally constructed between 2009 and 2014 by a German company, the hospital was inaugurated in July 2024 following a major redevelopment initiative led through a strategic partnership between the Iraqi Government and GSD/GKSD. This collaboration has transformed the hospital into one of Iraq’s most technologically advanced centres of care, significantly strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure and service capability. Under the new management model, the hospital has benefitted from the clinical expertise, operational knowledge, and technical support provided by GSD and GKSD physicians, technicians, and administrative specialists. These teams continue to deliver structured programmes in clinical training, technology adoption, and organisational development for local staff. With 492 beds, 16 operating theatres, 44 intensive care beds, and a workforce of approximately 3,000 medical and administrative staff, the Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital represents a major national healthcare milestone. It now provides high-quality services across key medical and surgical specialties, including cardiology, internal medicine, oncology, orthopaedics and trauma, paediatrics, and gynaecology. This landmark project marks a defining chapter in the evolution of HHH’s international footprint. It demonstrates how strategic partnerships, innovation, and the humanisation of care can strengthen national health systems, create long-term value, and build bridges between communities and nations.
