Al-Sayyab Teaching Hospital
The Al-Sayyab Teaching Hospital is a major tertiary-care facility located in Basra, the principal hub of southern Iraq. Developed under the Ministry of Health’s national hospital programme and constructed by the Turkish contractor Universal Acarsan (contract initiated in 2009), the hospital was formally inaugurated on 12 March 2023 by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani.
With 492 beds, the facility operates as a high-capacity public teaching hospital, providing a comprehensive range of general specialties alongside dedicated services for complex and advanced care. In September 2025, the Ministry of Health established a strategic public–private partnership with Gruppo San Donato and GKSD to support hospital management, clinical operations, technology transfer, and large-scale workforce development. This collaboration aims to strengthen operational performance, embed international clinical standards, and enhance service delivery across all departments. As part of the partnership, Al-Sayyab Teaching Hospital will establish three Centres of Excellence within the facility:
- Paediatric Cardiac Surgery;
- Spine Surgery (Scoliosis);
- Bone Marrow Transplant.
These centres will be supported by international clinical protocols, advanced digital tools, and structured training programmes for medical, nursing, and administrative staff.
Together, these initiatives will elevate the quality of care, expand service capability, and position Al-Sayyab as a modern reference hub for southern Iraq, contributing to long-term health system strengthening and improved population outcomes.
